Lithops

Lithops spp. Also known as: Living Stones, Pebble Plants, Split Rocks
Lithops are fascinating succulents native to South Africa that have evolved to mimic stones as camouflage from grazing animals. These tiny plants, typically 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) wide, consist of two fused leaves with a slit between them. They have very specific watering needs and are best for experienced succulent keepers.

Pruning

Frequency: Never prune
Best Season: Not applicable
Never remove old leaves - the plant absorbs them during splitting. Let the process occur naturally.

Use very gritty mineral soil with minimal organic matter. Deep pots for taproot. Group plantings work well.

Color
White or yellow daisy-like flowers
Flowers emerge from the slit between leaves. Blooms open in afternoon and close at night.

Propagation Methods

  • Seeds - sow on mineral-based soil
  • Division when clumps form (rare)
  • Very slow growers - patience required

Common Problems

  • Burst/rotting: Overwatering - the most common cause of death
  • Shriveling: Normal during splitting, abnormal otherwise
  • Elongated shape: Insufficient light (etiolation)
  • No splitting: Environmental stress or poor conditions

Pro Tips

  • Mimic their natural habitat: dry winters, summer rain
  • Splitting is when old leaves die and new pair emerges - DO NOT WATER
  • South-facing window with maximum light is ideal
  • Plant in groups for a beautiful 'rock garden' effect
