Pruning

Frequency: Remove damaged or dying leaves
Best Season: During growing season
Let leaves die back naturally in fall to store energy in tuber. Remove only fully dead foliage.

Repotting

Frequency: Replant tubers annually
Best Season: Early spring when starting new growth
Plant tubers 2 inches (5 cm) deep with knobby side up. Can start indoors before moving outside.

Propagation Methods

  • Divide tubers when dormant
  • Each section needs at least one eye (bud)
  • Let cuts dry before planting

Common Problems

  • Crispy leaf edges: Low humidity or underwatering
  • Pale colors: Too much direct sun or nutrient deficiency
  • Leggy growth: Insufficient light
  • Leaves dying in fall: Normal - entering winter dormancy

Pro Tips

  • Store dormant tubers in cool (55-60F/13-16C), dry location
  • Some morning sun enhances colors, but protect from afternoon sun
  • Start tubers indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost for earlier display
  • Outstanding for shaded patios, porches, and north-facing spots
